How to drill into tile

Forgot to ask the builder to install the mirror into your brand new bathroom? Maybe you’ve bought a new toilet roll holder and realised the bracket doesn’t quite line up with the old holes?

Either way, if you need to drill some holes in tile, it doesn't have to be stressful. Just follow these simple steps and make sure you get it right.

Step 1: Check what’s behind the tile

Avoid drilling above taps, sinks, or sockets electric-socket to keep away from pipes and cables, which typically run vertically. Use a detector to be absolutely sure.

Step 2: Mark the hole position

Measure carefully and mark your hole location. Place a small piece of masking tape over the spot and mark again on the tape. This will stop the drill bit skating and prevent surface chipping.

Step 3: Break the glazed surface

Place the tip of the drill bit directly on your marked point and apply firm, steady pressure, until you hear a soft crack as the glazed surface breaks. You’re not drilling yet - just breaking the glaze so the bit has something to bite into and won’t skate across the tile.

Step 4: Start drilling

Ensure hammer mode is switched off and you start the drill on its lowest speed setting. You can increase the speed as you get through the surface of the tile.

Start by placing the bit into the small nick you made in the glaze and begin drilling slowly. Apply light pressure and let the drill do the work. Pause periodically and spray the hole and the bit the water bottle to aid the drill and prevent overheating.

Step 5: Through the tile and beyond

Once you’ve drilled through the tile - stop and switch to a masonry bit if you're drilling into brick or block. You can also switch on hammer mode if you need it.

Drilling into tile is mostly about patience and control. There’s no need to force it. Take your time and keep both the drill bit and the hole moist as you work. Do that, and you’ll end up with clean, precise holes without breaking a tile.
