How to unblock a toilet

Finding a blocked toilet is never ideal, even at the best of times. The good news is that most blockages can be cleared quickly with a few simple tools and the right actions. Before you panic and call a plumber, try these steps.

Step 1: Stop the water level rising

If the water level in the bowl is already high, don't flush again. Another flush could cause it to overflow. Wait a few minutes for the water level to settle before attempting to clear the blockage. Lay down some old towels around the base of the toilet just in case things get messy.

Step 2: Try hot water and washing up liquid

A simple blockage can often be loosened without tools. Pour a generous amount of washing up liquid into the bowl, followed by a bucket of hot (not boiling) water from waist height. The pressure and heat can help soften and move the blockage.

Leave it for 10–15 minutes to soak.

Step 3: Use a plunger

If the blockage remains, it’s time to use the plunger. Place the plunger over the toilet outlet so it forms a tight seal. Push down gently at first to remove trapped air, then plunge firmly up and down. The goal is to create suction that dislodges the blockage in the pipe.

If there are other appliances connected to the same waste pipe (such as sinks, baths, or showers), it can help to cover their plug holes and overflow openings with a damp cloth or plug. This prevents air escaping and allows the plunger to create stronger suction where you need it.

After 10–15 strong plunges, remove the plunger and check whether the water drains normally.

Step 4: Test with a flush

Once the water level has dropped and the bowl appears clear, try flushing the toilet. If the water drains normally, the blockage has been cleared. If the water rises again, repeat the plunging process.

In many cases, these steps will be enough to get things flowing normally again.

However, if the toilet still won’t clear, or the water continues to rise when you flush, the blockage may be further down the pipe or in the main drainage line. At that point it’s best to contact a professional drainage specialist, who will have the proper equipment to locate and remove the obstruction safely.
